Ilham Aliyev, the president of Azerbaijan, and the president of Turkey spoke over the phone Wednesday, discussing regional and international concerns as well as their bilateral relations.
Erdogan stated that with the idea of “two states and one nation”, Turkey and Azerbaijan will keep expanding their collaboration in all areas.
Tense Interactions
Since the Armenian forces seized Karabakh, a region recongnized by the international community as belonging to Azerbaijan, and seven neighboring areas in 1991, relations between the nations of the Southern Caucasus have been strained.
Azerbaijan freed the majority of the region during the conflict in the fall of 2020, which came to an end when a peace deal mediated by Russia made it possible for continued normalization and demarcation negotiations.
The region’s separatist forces surrendered during a “anti-terrorist operation” in September 2023, when Azerbaijan established full sovereignty in Karabakh.There are factors that need to be considered.
