Fethullah Gülen founded the Hizmet movement, a significant Islamic organization in Turkey and beyond. In his later years, he faced accusations of orchestrating an attempted coup against President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, which he denied. Once allies, Gülen and Erdogan had a dramatic falling out, with Erdogan blaming Gülen for the 2016 coup attempt that resulted in the deaths of around 250 people. Gülen had been living in self-imposed exile in the US since 1999.
