Few people, according to Trump, are as knowledgeable about Latin American politics as Kevin Marino Cabrera, who he describes as “a fierce fighter for America First principles.”
Miami-Dade County Commissioner Kevin Marino Cabrera has been nominated by US President-elect Donald Trump to be the ambassador to Panama.
In a post on Truth Social on Wednesday, Trump stated, “I am happy to announce that Kevin Marino Cabrera will serve as the United States Ambassador to the Republic of Panama.”
Trump referred to Cabrera as “a fierce fighter for America First principles” and claimed that he had played a significant role in promoting global collaboration and economic progress.
“Few understand Latin American politics as well as Kevin — He will do a FANTASTIC job representing our Nation’s interests in Panama!” he stated.
According to Trump, Cabrera served as his 2020 Florida state director and was a member of the RNC Platform Committee.
Trump and Panama dispute
Following Trump’s threats to reclaim US authority over the Panama Canal, which the US managed for decades before ceding to Panama in 1999, his choice for ambassador was made public.
The US has maintained diplomatic ties with the Central American nation since 1903, but Trump claimed that they are “ripping us off on the Panama Canal, far beyond their wildest dreams.”
On Wednesday, Trump claimed in a post on Truth Social that Chinese troops were running the canal illegally and “always making certain that the United States puts in Billions of Dollars in’repair’ money but will have absolutely nothing to say about ‘anything.'”
According to Panamanian President Jose Raul Mulino, China had no say in how the canal was run.
