Around October 21, Mondlane fled Mozambique, claiming he was afraid for his life because he was contesting the outcome of the October 8 presidential election.

The opposition leader from Mozambique, who has led almost two months of lethal demonstrations against the contested election results from outside the nation, declared that he will return the next week in time for the new president’s inauguration.

“Venancio Mondlane will be at Mavalane International Airport on Thursday, January 9th, at 8:05 minutes sharp”, Mondlane stated during a Facebook live broadcast on SUnday.

Around October 21, after contesting the results of the October 9 presidential election, in which he finished second behind the candidate of the incumbent Frelimo party, he fled Mozambique, claiming he was afraid for his life.

On January 15, Daniel Chapo, the president-elect, is scheduled to take office.

After a contentious court decision supported Daniel Chapo’s reelection as a candidate of the Frelimo, the party in power since the country’s independence, violent riots erupted in Mozambique.

Protests erupted nationwide within minutes of the news. In recent days, factories, banks, police stations, and Frelimo offices have been plundered and set on fire around the country.

In the midst of political turmoil after the contentious October elections, more than 1,500 inmates broke out of a high-security jail after demolishing a wall. Over 30 people were killed and 15 injured in clashes during the breakout. Later, about 150 prisoners were taken back.
