President Yoon Suk-yeol ought to be suspended immediately, according to Han Dong-hoon, the leader of the ruling party.
The leader of the ruling party has warned that if South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol is not suspended, he could endanger the country’s inhabitants.
“(If) President Yoon continues to hold the office of the presidency, there is a significant risk that extreme actions similar to the martial law declaration could be repeated, which could put the Republic of Korea and its citizens in great danger,” Han Dong-hoon, the head of the People Power Party
Although Han did not call on members to vote for Yoon’s impeachment, he stated that Yoon must be removed from office for the nation’s safety since he attempted to implement martial law.
The leader of the ruling party also stated that there is credible proof that Yoon ordered the arrest of important politicians the night he imposed martial law this week.
“It was confirmed last night (Thursday) through credible evidence that on the day martial law was declared, President Yoon Suk-yeol instructed the chief of the Counterintelligence Command, his junior from university, to arrest key politicians, (labelling) them as anti-state forces, and mobilised intelligence agencies to arrest them.”
When Yoon declared martial law on Tuesday to crush “anti-state forces” and defeat obstructionist political rivals, he startled the country and his own ruling party.
About six hours later, when Parliament, including several of his party members, voted against the decree, he changed his mind.
vote for impeachment
The national police have opened an inquiry into Yoon after an opposition party and activists submitted charges of rebellion, and the main opposition Democratic Party has set an impeachment vote for Saturday night.
The ruling party declared its opposition to impeachment on Thursday, but Han hinted that the party’s position might be changing in front of “credible evidence” that Yoon had planned to hold and arrest political figures at Gwacheon, which is located just south of Seoul.
“I said yesterday that I would try not to pass this impeachment in order to prevent damage to the people and supporters caused by the unprepared chaos, but I believe that President Yoon Suk-yeol’s immediate suspension of office is necessary to protect the Republic of Korea and its people in light of the newly revealed facts,” Han stated.
He didn’t specifically demand impeachment or answer questions from reporters.
Lee Jae-myung, the leader of the Democratic Party, claimed that the president was waging a revolt by declaring martial law in order to hold onto or increase his authority.
His words, “It’s an act of insurrection,” “It’s a pro-military coup.”
