According to the evidence, Israel’s actions in Gaza violate the 1948 Genocide Convention.
According to a statement from President Cyril Ramaphosa’s office, South Africa has submitted “evidence of a genocide” perpetrated by Israel in Gaza to the International Court of Justice.
According to the president’s statement on Monday, the dossier “contains evidence which shows how the government of Israel has violated the genocide convention by promoting the destruction of Palestinians living in Gaza.”
Additional facts, evidence, and arguments in South Africa’s continuing genocide lawsuit against Israel were included in the filing, it was stated.
The evidence indicates that Israel is “ignoring and defying” a number of interim measures that the UN’s top court had previously mandated, in addition to physically destroying Palestinians.
The president cited the evidence presented in more than 750 pages of text, bolstered by exhibits and annexes totaling more than 4,000 pages, to claim that Israel is “using starvation as a weapon of war and to further Israel’s aims to depopulate Gaza through mass death and forced displacement of Palestinians.”
Fresh proof
It further stated that the cache of new evidence might not be released to the public.
According to the statement, Israel “now seems intent to follow a similar path of destruction in Lebanon” and is stepping up its killing of civilians in Gaza at the same time the evidence was filed.
Israel, the respondent, has until July 28 of next year to submit a response to the new evidence.
In late 2023, South Africa filed a genocide complaint against Israel at a tribunal in The Hague, alleging that the country had violated its obligations under the 1948 Genocide Convention by bombing Gaza nonstop since last October.
Public hearings for the case at the ICJ started in January, and a number of nations have participated, including Turkey, Nicaragua, Palestine, Spain, Mexico, Libya, and Colombia.
