UNITED NATIONS: Six Pakistanis were among 117 UN peacemakers who were awarded UN orders of courage on Thursday for immolating their lives for the cause of peace.

Five of the six — Tahir Ikram, Tahir Mehmood, Mohammed Naeem, Adil Jan, and Mohammed Shafiq — were from the fortified forces, while the sixth, Ibrar Syed, was a servicewoman.

At the UN Headquarters, Secretary-General António Guterres laid a wreath to recognize the nearly United Nations peacemakers who have lost their lives since 1948. And latterly, he presided over a format in which the Dag Hammarskjöld Orders of Courage were awarded posthumously to 117 service, police, and mercenary peacemakers, including six Pakistanis, who lost their lives serving under the United Nations flag in 2021.

Captain Abdelrazakh Hamit Bahar of Chad posthumously entered the “ Captain Mbaye Diagne Medal for Exceptional Courage ”. Major Winnet Zaharare of Zimbabwe entered the Military Gender Advocate of the Time Award and was declared a champion of gender equivalency.

Pakistan is one of the longest-serving and largest contributors to UN Peacekeeping for decades. Since joining the United Nations on Sept 30, 1947, Pakistan has shared in 70 UN peacekeeping operations across the globe. The Pakistan fortified forces are the third-largest contributor of colors to UN peacekeeping sweats, behind India and Ethiopia.

“ We’re committed to helping the vulnerable communities affected by conflict and will continue to acclimatize to the changing terrain and requirements of the peacekeeping operations, ” said Pakistan’s UN Ambassador Munir Akram.

Recognizing the offerings of the six Pakistanis who lost their lives in 2021, Ambassador Akram said “ We partake the grief of their families and will noway forget these icons who won respect and recognition for their motherland. ”

The UN clerk-general recalled that so far further than one million women and men had served as UN peacemakers since 1948. “ We’re reminded of an age-old verity peace can noway be taken for granted. Peace is the prize, ” he said.
