Russia Ukraine Conflict Explained

The year 2022 saw the inception of almost world war 3 in the form of the Ukraine-Russia war. This web series takes a look into the historical aspect of the conflict and how it emerged.

The conflict between Russia and Ukraine started in 1991 when Ukraine gained independence from the then fallen Soviet Union.

Unfair presidential elections in Ukraine led to the Orange Revolution and a pro-Russian government failed to take office. However, in 2010, Victor Yanukovich won the presidential elections. A gas deal between Ukraine and Russia was signed.

Yanukovich’s government rejected to sign a deal with the EU and opts for reviving its ties with the Moscow government.

Pro-Russian separatists take over Luhansk and Donetsk region and proclaimed the creation of ‘People’s Republics’. Minsk agreement is signed calling for a ceasefire and pulling back of all the troops.

The shooting down of the Malaysian flight, by a Russian-built surface-to-air missile, sparked tensions between Ukraine and Russia. In 2016, NATO deployed 4 battalions in Eastern Europe to deter possible future Russian aggression.

In response to NATO forces being present so close to its Eastern border, Russia moves its troops towards the border with Ukraine. Russia put forward a list of demands, otherwise, Russian troops were not to move from the border.

In February 2022, Russia announced the invasion on Ukraine and sent its troops in from 3 sides. This step earned Russia a number of sanctions from a number of countries worldwide.
