Pakistani nuclear scientists are going to receive three awards from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the UN Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) in September.
According to a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) have jointly conferred awards on Pakistan’s Nuclear Institute for Agriculture and Biology (NIAB) and five of the country’s scientists.
The prizes were granted to the NIAB and the scientists in appreciation of “Pakistan’s advancement in the application of nuclear technology for the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals, including food security”, according to a statement released on Wednesday.
The NIAB received the Outstanding Achievement Award, a group of four scientists from the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) received the Team Achievement Award, and another PAEC scientist received the Young Scientist Award for his work in plant mutation breeding and related technologies, according to the statement.
The awardees will receive award certificates at the IAEA’s 65th General Conference in September 2021.
“Extensive civilian nuclear applications in Pakistan are directly contributing to the well-being of the people and national development in the areas of public health, medicine, agriculture, industry and nuclear power generation,” the Foreign Office said in the statement.
Pakistan has a lengthy history of working in the fields of nuclear research, technology, and electricity. It was the sixth country to ratify the IAEA Statute, providing one of the required 18 ratifications for the Statute and IAEA mission to enter into force.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has been assisting the country in its attempts to train specialized personnel.
It designated the Pakistan Institute of Engineering and Applied Sciences (PIEAS) as an IAEA Collaborating Center in December 2019 to promote the country’s research, development, and capacity building in advanced and novel nuclear technology.
