On Saturday, Muhammad Sadiq, Pakistan’s Special Representative for Afghanistan, urged the Afghan government to “beef up the security of our embassy and its personnel.”
The demand follows the attack on Pakistan’s embassy in Kabul yesterday, which targeted Ubaidur Rehman Nizamani, the CdA to Afghanistan. Nizamani escaped injury, but his guard sustained serious wounds.
In a progression of tweets, Sadiq said: “The safety of our mission members is our top priority. The Afghan interim government will first need to improve the security of our embassy and its staff.
He promised that Pakistan’s government would also “provide necessary resources to further enhance the security of our diplomats to ensure that they continue and effectively discharge their duties in the most important foreign capital for Pakistan.”
2. Ambassador Nizamani and his team is working in an extraordinarily challenging situation. Our top most priority is the security of members of our mission. First and foremost, the Afghan Interim Government will need to beef up the security of our Embassy and its personnel.
Security guard Sepoy Israr Mohammad sustained “critical injuries” while protecting the mission head while Nizamani remained safe.
According to Sadiq, the soldier “who took bullets in the chest” was “evacuated last night by a special plane” to the Combined Military Hospital in Peshawar.
He thanked the guard for his “extraordinary courage and devotion to duty” and wished him speedy recuperation.
A single attacker “came behind the cover of houses and started firing,” an Embassy official told AFP.

According to Khalid Zadran, a spokesman for the Kabul police, one suspect was detained after security personnel rushed to the embassy and halted the firing.
He said that more information about the clearance process would come out later, and he also said that weapons were found.
The attack was condemned by the Afghan foreign ministry and a number of Pakistani officials.
