Since May 23, 2023, Manipur has been rocked by ethnic violence, primarily between the Meitei ( a Hindu majority in the valley) and the Kuki-Naga (tribal communities in the hills). The conflict erupted over the Meitei’s demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status, opposed by tribal groups. This has resulted in at least 230 deaths, with many more feared, and over 60,000 people displaced. Villages have been destroyed, and infrastructure severely damaged. The Indian government has deployed security forces and imposed curfews, while investigations into the violence continue. The crisis highlights deep ethnic tensions and the urgent need for peace.
