A magnitude 5.9 earthquake has struck Türkiye’s northwestern Duzce fiefdom, with temblors felt in Istanbul megacity, capital Ankara and other regions, officers said.

The earthquake, which struck at 408 am(original time) on Wednesday, was centered about 14 kilometers northwest of Duzce, in the Golyaka quarter, Türkiye’s disaster operation agency, AFAD said.

It said 35 people were injured, one of them critically, and reported 70 foreshocks in the region.

The earthquake woke people from their sleep and numerous rushed out of structures in fear in the fiefdom that has endured earthquakes in history. Power in the region was cut.

AFAD said electricity in the Duzce fiefdom was snapped as a preventative measure.

Turkish Red Crescent and AFAD dispatched their brigades to help locals by furnishing robes and warm food.

“Our brigades are supplying robes, food, and water. fresh blood inventories were transferred to hospitals that may be demanded in the region,” Turkish Red Crescent chairman Kerem Kinik said.

No casualties reported
There were no reports of loss of life at the moment, Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu said.

“We nearly completed our checks in the townlets around Golyaka. There’s no severe damage reported; only some barns were wrecked in these places. There was a power cut during the earthquake but authorities are reinstating power now,” Soylu said on broadcaster TRT Haber.

“Field scanning continues,” AFAD chairman Yunus Sezer said.

Duzce Governor Cevdet Atay blazoned that seminaries will be closed on Wednesday.

The earthquake struck 10 days after the country held civil earthquake drills to mark the 23rd anniversary of the woeful 1999 earthquake in the same fiefdom which killed 710 people.

A magnitude-6.8 earthquake hit Elazig in January 2020, killing further than 40 people.

Türkiye sits on top of major fault lines and is constantly shaken by earthquakes.
