Despite his prior promise to stay out of judicial affairs, US President Joe Biden pardons Hunter Biden, protecting his son from accusations he claims are unfair and politically motivated.
Hunter, the son of US President Joe Biden, was officially pardoned on Sunday. Hunter faces sentence in two criminal cases involving the purchase of a firearm and tax cheating.
“No reasonable person who looks at the facts of Hunter’s cases can reach any other conclusion than Hunter was singled out only because he is my son — and that is wrong,” the president stated in a statement, describing it as “a miscarriage of justice.”
The younger Biden pled guilty in a separate tax evasion trial and was found guilty earlier this year of lying about using drugs when he purchased a firearm, which is a crime.
The pardon follows Biden’s frequent declarations that he would not get involved in his son’s legal issues.

As late as September, the White House press secretary stated that Biden would not pardon Hunter.
The Supreme Court’s broad decision on presidential immunity has also put a halt to criminal cases against President-elect Donald Trump, virtually guaranteeing that Biden’s Republican opponent will never be imprisoned, despite his historic conviction in May for falsifying business records.
“I said I would not interfere with the Justice Department’s decision-making, and I kept my word even as I have watched my son being selectively, and unfairly, prosecuted,” Biden said in his statement on Sunday.
“The charges in his cases came about only after several of my political opponents in Congress instigated them to attack me and oppose my election,” he said.
“I believe in the justice system, but as I have wrestled with this, I also believe raw politics has infected this process and it led to a miscarriage of justice.”
