Israel assists a soldier in escaping Brazil while war crimes in Gaza are being investigated

According to the Israeli Foreign Ministry, it assisted the soldier in leaving the nation and cautioned Israelis against discussing their military service on social media.

After a group Israel of war crimes in besieged Gaza filed a lawsuit against a former soldier, Israel assisted him in leaving Brazil.

After what it called “anti-Israel elements” requested a probe last week, Israel’s Foreign Ministry announced on Sunday that it has assisted the former soldier in leaving Brazil on a commercial flight.

It cautioned Israelis against discussing their military service on social media.

The Hind Rajab Foundation, which was founded in memory of a 5-year-old Palestinian girl who was killed by Israel in Gaza, said that after filing a complaint based on photos. geolocation information, and video footage that showed the soldier participating in the destruction of civilian homes, Brazilian authorities had opened an investigation into him.

The action was called a “pivotal step toward accountability for crimes committed in Gaza” during the roughly 15-month war, according to the organization.

An on-call federal judge in Brazil’s Federal District ordered the probe, according to Brazilian media on Saturday. Although it was originally reported over the weekend, the decision was made on December 30.

“A challenge to the sovereignty of Brazil”
HRF said in a statement that Israel had planned the soldier’s escape in order to thwart justice and denounced his escape.

According to the statement, “there are also indications that evidence is being destroyed”, “This is an insult to Brazil’s sovereignty and rule of law in addition to being a scandal. Israel has previously used comparable strategies”.

Brazilian authorities were urged by the organization “to fulfil their responsibilities, protect their judicial process, and ensure justice prevails”.

In situations involving armed conflict and suspected war crimes, HRF is an organization that promotes justice, human rights, and accountability for transgressions of international law.

The Brazil case made it more likely that regular Israeli soldiers might be prosecuted while they are overseas.

The escape comes after a string of comparable events involving Israeli troops overseas. Israeli officials immediately evacuated an active-duty Israeli soldier who was identified in Sri Lanka last month after a Palestinian advocacy group there demanded that he be arrested, according to Israel’s Channel 12.
