In the first publicly confirmed execution since the Taliban took control of Afghanistan last year, the administration of the group has executed a man in western Afghanistan who was accused of murder.
A man who was accused of stabbing another man to death in 2017 was put to death in western Farah province, according to Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid on Wednesday. Senior members of the group were present at the execution.
The execution was done by the dad of the person in question, who shot the man multiple times, Mujahid included a later proclamation.
According to Mujahid, the case was looked into by three courts and authorized by the group’s supreme spiritual leader, who lives in the southern part of Kandahar province.
Mujahid stated that the execution was attended by more than a dozen senior Taliban officials, including the acting interior minister Sirajuddin Haqqani, the acting deputy prime minister Abdul Ghani Baradar, the chief justice of the country, the acting foreign minister, and the acting education minister.

Public lashings
This comes after the country’s Supreme Court said that men and women accused of robbery and adultery had been slashed in public in several provinces in recent weeks, suggesting a possible return to 1990s-era customs.
Last month, a UN human rights office spokesperson urged the Taliban to immediately stop using public floggings in Afghanistan.
In November, the supreme spiritual leader of the Taliban met with judges and advised them to impose such punishments.
