The decision was made in response to the non-binding resolution approved by the Canadian Parliament urging the international community to support the creation of a two-state solution between Israel and Palestine.
According to a Canadian government source who spoke with the AFP news agency, Canada has stopped sending weapons to Israel.
The decision was made on Tuesday. Since Israel’s attack on blockaded Gaza, Ottawa has only sent “non-lethal” items to Israel, such Canadian communications equipment.
The source also stated that there haven’t been any shipments since January.
Israel has long been a major recipient of Canadian arms exports; according to Radio Canada, over $15 million worth of military hardware was shipped to Israel in 2022, up from $19 million in 2021.
That puts Israel in the top ten countries to which Canada supplies armaments.
A group of attorneys and Canadians of Palestinian descent filed a lawsuit against the government of Canada in March, requesting the suspension of arms sales to Israel on the grounds that Ottawa was breaking both Canadian and international law.
A non-binding resolution urging the international community to work toward a two-state solution between Israel and Palestine was passed by the Canadian Parliament on Monday.
“It’s a real thing,” Foreign Minister Melanie Joly stated to the publication The Toronto Star.
The massacre in Gaza by Israel
Israel’s bloody assault on the blockaded enclave has resulted in at least 31,819 deaths and 73,934 injuries.
A devastating blockade of most food, clean water, and medication has forced 85% of Gaza’s people to flee inside, and the UN estimates that 60% of the enclave’s infrastructure has been damaged or destroyed as a result of the Israeli conflict.
The International Court of Justice has accused Israel of committing genocide. An interim verdict from January required Tel Aviv to make sure that its soldiers do not commit acts of genocide and to ensure that residents in Gaza receive humanitarian aid.
