Biden pushes Modi to cut Russian oil imports, gets no commitment

WASHINGTON: US President Joe Biden has conveyed to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi that it’s not in India’s interest to increase canvas significance from Russia, the White House said on Monday.

Mr. Biden and Mr. Modi had their first virtual peak that concentrated on the war in Ukraine where the overrunning Russian army is floundering to check a strong Ukrainian resistance.

Participating in the details of the meeting with the media, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said that President Biden “ made it clear … he doesn’t believe it’s in India’s interest to accelerate or increase significances of Russian energy, and other goods as well”. This was an egregious reference to an India-Russia deal for furnishing S-400 Russian air defense systems to New Delhi.

The Biden-Modi commerce coincided with the demoiselle India-US 2 2 dialogue under the Biden administration that seeks to further expand a formerly close US-India cooperation. Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, who’s representing India at the 2 2 meetings, also met President Biden at the White House before in the day.

At her autumn news briefing, Ms. Psaki characterized the Biden-Modi addresses as a “ formative, productive” videotape conference between the leaders who bandied the conflict in Ukraine and India’s adding reliance on the Russian canvas.

The US media, still, reported that President Biden tried to inhibit Mr. Modi from continuing to buy canvas from Russia but failed to get a commitment from him.

“ What the chairman did … was to make clear what the impact of course of our warrants would be. We anticipate everybody to abide by those,” Ms. Psaki said.

“ India only significances about 1-2 percent of its energy from Russia. The chairman made clear that we’d be happy to help them in diversifying this as well.”

Asked if Mr. Modi had given any commitment to reduce or exclude purchases of Russian canvas, Ms. Psaki said “ I ’ll let high minister Modi and the Indians speak to that.” Ms. Psaki, still, clarified that the relationship with India was “ vitally important to the United States and to the chairman”, adding that she didn’t see the virtual meeting “ as an inimical call”.

Mr. Modi on Monday profited from the occasion to accentuate India’s commitment to guarding mortal rights in Ukraine. “ We’ve placed significance on the safety of the mercenary population in Ukraine and the continued force of philanthropic aid to them,” he said.

The White House also issued a readout of the meeting, saying that Mr. Biden spoke with Mr. Modi to inaugurate the US-India 2 2 Ministerial Dialogue. It said President Biden and Mr. Modi will meet in person latterly this spring, in Tokyo, for the Quad peak.
