Both parties’ top diplomats meet in Washington, DC. According to Bloomberg, in an effort to appease Trump, New Delhi is getting ready to repatriate its people who are living in the US illegally.
According to the State Department, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio discussed concerns about “irregular migration” with his Indian colleague, Subrahmanyam Jaishankar.
“Secretary Rubio also emphasised the Trump Administration’s desire to work with India to advance economic ties and address concerns related to irregular migration,” the State Department said in a statement late Tuesday.
In an effort to crack down on illegal immigration and forward his plan to deport millions of illegal immigrants, US President Donald Trump signed a number of executive orders on Monday.
Last year, he had made immigration a major campaign issue.
According to sources cited by Bloomberg on Tuesday, the Indian government is willing to cooperate with the Trump administration in order to locate and repatriate all of its people who are living in the US illegally.
According to the article, the two nations have jointly identified some 18,000 undocumented Indian migrants in the US who may face deportation.
Visas for H-1Bs
In the midst of a spat over H-1B visas, in which Trump and his billionaire supporter Elon Musk have offered support for the visas, India has separately stated that the flow of talented professionals is a significant aspect of India-US ties and benefits both nations.
The United States issues the majority of H-1B visas to India, which is well-known for having a large pool of IT specialists, many of whom work all over the world.
Musk promised to go to “war” to defend the program, which Trump claims he completely supports despite opposition from some of his fans.
Approximately 78% of the 265,777 H-1B visas that the US issued for the fiscal year that concluded on September 30, 2023, went to India.
