A parliamentary attempt to remove President Yoon from office in South Korea is unsuccessful.

It took the backing of two-thirds of the National Assembly to impeach Yoon.

After the majority of MPs from his conservative ruling party abstained from the vote, a parliamentary attempt to remove President Yoon Suk-yeol from office for imposing martial law for a brief period of time failed on Saturday.

Public demonstrations demanding Yoon’s removal are anticipated to pick up steam if the motion is defeated; according to a survey, the majority of South Koreans want the president’s impeachment.

Although his own ruling party criticized Yoon’s proclamation of martial law, it is also adamantly opposed to Yoon’s impeachment, presumably out of concern that liberals may win the president.

Two-thirds of the National Assembly, or 200 of its 300 members, had to agree to Yoon’s impeachment.

Only three PPP members took part in the voting, despite the opposition parties which filed the impeachment resolution holding 192 seats.

The vote did not exceed 200, so the motion was discarded without counting the ballots.
