After eight individuals were shot and died over the weekend in Mexico City, violence broke out in a well-known tourist attraction.

Authorities said on Sunday that eight people had killed in a shooting over the weekend in the Morelos state of Mexico, which is close to Mexico City.

The incident happened on Saturday in the Huitzilac municipality, near a highway that links the city with the popular tourist destination of Cuernavaca.

According to the Morelos prosecutor’s office, four persons passed away at the site and four more passed away after being transported to the hospital.

Morelos is a well-liked getaway spot for inhabitants of Mexico City, despite its proximity to the volatile state of Guerrero, home to multiple drug cartels.

Nine people were killed in Cuernavaca, Mexico, in November of last year during an armed altercation between police and suspected criminals.

Official data indicate that since the government initiated a contentious anti-drug campaign including the military in 2006, almost 450,000 people have been slain nationwide.
