Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi tells other top G20 officials in Johannesburg that Beijing supports all efforts, including the recent agreement achieved between the US and Russia.
At a G20 conference in South Africa, China publicly backed US President Donald Trump’s attempt to reach an agreement with Russia to end the conflict in Ukraine, while US allies supported Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Wang Yi told other G20 foreign ministers assembled in Johannesburg on Thursday that “China supports all efforts conducive to peace (in Ukraine), including the recent consensus reached between the United States and Russia,” according to a statement from his ministry.
“China is willing to continue playing a constructive role in the political resolution of the crisis,” he stated.
Wang did not restate his call for all parties involved in the Russia-Ukraine crisis to be included in any peace negotiations, which he expressed at the Munich Security Conference last Friday.
With a phone conversation to Russian President Vladimir Putin and discussions between top US and Russian officials that have ignored Ukraine, Trump has reversed US war policy less than a month into his office.
Following Trump’s Wednesday denunciation of Zelenskyy as a “dictator,” G20 nations like Australia, Germany, and the United Kingdom issued comments endorsing the Ukrainian president.
Following a 4-1/2-hour meeting in Saudi Arabia, the Trump administration announced on Tuesday that it has agreed to further negotiations with Russia to settle the dispute that has lasted for almost three years.
Although Russia stated the discussions were beneficial, it reaffirmed its demands, including that it would not accept Ukraine joining NATO.
As Zelenskyy charged that Trump was living in a Russian “space of disinformation,” Trump referred to Zelenskyy as a “modestly successful comedian” and accused him of being the catalyst for the February 2022 commencement of the war with Russia.
“No appetite” for another Ukrainian financing bill
Mike Johnson, the speaker of the US House, stated Thursday that there is “no appetite” for another Ukrainian financing bill.
Johnson responded to a question on whether he sees another financing bill for the war in Ukraine by telling Newsmax, “There’s no appetite for that,” at the Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington, DC.
“We must put an end to the conflict. Additionally, he said, “I can assure you that our European allies also recognize the necessity.”
According to Johnson, Trump is working to resolve the situation between Russia and Ukraine in a way that will benefit the United States.
However, you don’t bring the parties into the room for the initial meeting when you begin a mediation or arbitration between them. You do it on your own.
Therefore, I believe Zelenskyy’s grievance that he was not invited to Russia’s initial meeting in Saudi Arabia is unfounded. “Trump is attempting to establish a level playing field and create the conditions necessary for that actual negotiation to take place,” he continued.
