Following last-minute negotiations, Canada and Mexico declare a halt in US tariffs.

The two nations’ presidents affirm that the US tariffs will be paused for a month and that negotiations with Washington will continue.

Following last-minute agreements by the US neighbors to strengthen border controls against the influx of migrants and the narcotic fentanyl, President Donald Trump postponed the implementation of tariffs on Mexico and Canada for one month.

President Claudia Sheinbaum said Monday that Mexico will strengthen border security with the United States to combat drug trafficking as part of a set of agreements with the closely-knit neighbors.

“We had a good conversation with President Trump with much respect for our relationship and sovereignty,” Sheinbaum posted on the social media site X.

“Mexico will immediately reinforce the northern border with 10,000 National Guard troops to prevent drug trafficking from Mexico to the United States, particularly fentanyl,” she stated.

“The United States is committed to working to prevent the trafficking of high-powered weapons to Mexico,” she stated.

In addition, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau described his “good” phone conversation with Trump and outlined Ottawa’s plans to address the migrant and fentanyl flows.

The border will be guarded by nearly 10,000 frontline personnel, Trudeau said in a statement on X. “Canada is implementing our $1.3 billion border plan — reinforcing the border with new choppers, technology and personnel, enhanced coordination with our American partners, and increased resources to stop the flow of fentanyl,” Trudeau said.

“In addition, Canada is making new commitments to appoint a Fentanyl Czar; we will list cartels as terrorists, ensure 24/7 eyes on the border, launch a Canada- US Joint Strike Force to combat organised crime, fentanyl and money laundering.”

China is still in equilibrium.
Trump’s tariffs continue to target China. In addition to the current levies, it will be subject to an additional 10% charge.

According to the US president, last-minute negotiations between Beijing and Washington will presumably take place “probably in the next 24 hours” in order to save Chinese shipments from more taxes.

According to Trump, the US and Mexico will engage in negotiations throughout this month.

Trudeau added that negotiations with the US would go on.

Sheinbaum and Trudeau promised reprisal after Trump proposed broad tariffs on China, Canada, and Mexico on Saturday, citing a “major threat” from narcotics and illegal immigration.

The world economy has been rocked by Trump’s promised tariffs, and the three nations are Washington’s top trading partners.
