Indonesia will become a full member of the BRICS bloc: Brazil

Indonesia seeks to advance the interests of the Global South and support developing nations.

In a statement, the Brazilian government announced that Indonesia is officially becoming a full member of BRICS, which is a club of major rising economies that also includes China, India, South Africa, and Russia.

The fourth most populous country in the world, Indonesia, had earlier stated that it wanted to join the group in order to support emerging nations and advance the Global South’s interests.

According to Brazil, which will be the bloc’s 2025 president, the member states unanimously agreed to Indonesia’s admission as part of an expansion drive that was first approved at the bloc’s 2023 Johannesburg summit.

The South American country pointed out that although Indonesia’s petition was approved by the union in 2023, the Asian nation requested to join after last year’s presidential election. In October, President Prabowo Subianto assumed office.

“Indonesia shares with the other members of the group support for the reform of global governance institutions, and contributes positively to the deepening of cooperation in the Global South”, said the Brazilian government.

Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates are also members of the BRICS organization.
