Lee Jae-myung’s comments follow President Yoon Suk-yeol’s declaration that he would fight to the end and his accusation that the opposition was immobilizing the administration.
A day before of a scheduled parliamentary vote on President Yoon Suk-yeol’s temporary declaration of martial law, opposition leader Lee Jae-myung of South Korea stated that impeaching him is the best option to bring order back to the nation.
Lee, the leader of the Democratic Party, referred to Yoon’s comments as “a declaration of war” on the populace on Friday.
“It proved that impeachment is the fastest and the most effective way to end the confusion,” stated the president.
On Thursday, Yoon pledged to “fight to the end,” accusing the opposition of paralyzing the government and asserting that his party’s resounding loss in a parliamentary election in April was dubious due to a North Korean hack into the election commission.
He claimed that the opposition was “dancing the sword dance of madness” by attempting to remove a president who had been elected democratically.
Unrest in politics
Political unrest and widespread demonstrations demanding Yoon’s removal have resulted from his brief proclamation of martial law on December 3.
Although there was no significant violence or casualties, the decree summoned hundreds of armed troops who tried to storm the electoral commission and encircle parliament.
The National Assembly unanimously voted against martial law, forcing Yoon to lift it after just six hours.
Last Saturday, the majority of his ruling People Power Party (PPP) abstained from voting in the first effort to remove Yoon from office. Since then, a few PPP members have openly backed a vote to remove him from office.
Another impeachment bill has been presented by the opposition parties, who dominate the one-chamber parliament, and a vote is scheduled for this Saturday. To get the two-thirds majority needed to enact the bill, at least eight PPP members must join.
