Authorities are still searching for the missing after a boat capsized off the coast of Tunisia, leaving nine asylum seekers confirmed dead and six more missing. A total of 27 people were rescued.

In the most recent migrant boat tragedy in the Mediterranean, a judicial official reported on Thursday that the coast guard of Tunisia had retrieved the dead of nine irregular asylum seekers and that six more were still unaccounted for after their boat sank off the country’s coast.

As a result of the boat breaking down and taking on water owing to inclement weather, the Coast Guard has rescued 27 persons thus far.

Testimonies from survivors indicate that at least forty-two persons were on board the boat when it went down.

A search is being conducted for at least six migrants who were on the boat when it capsized off the coast of Chebba, Judge Farid Ben Jha told Reuters.

Everybody on the boat was from a country in sub-Saharan Africa.

Libya is no longer the main departure point for Tunisians and those from other parts of Africa who are looking to migrate to Europe in search of a better life. Tunisia is currently dealing with an unparalleled migration problem.
