John Mahama, the former president of Ghana, returns after winning an election.

The Electoral Commission has not yet made the actual results public, but Mahamudu Bawumia, the ruling NPP candidate, acknowledged loss based on his party’s forecasts.

Voters seemed to be punishing the incumbent party for how the government handled an economic crisis, and as a result, former Ghanaian president John Drahami Mahama scored a historic comeback election triumph.

After failing to overcome popular dissatisfaction with the high cost of living, New Patriotic Party nominee and vice president Mahamudu Bawumia acknowledged on Sunday that Ghanaians desired change after Saturday’s election.

His loss put an end to the NPP’s eight years in office under President Nana Akufo-Addo, whose final term was characterized by a debt default, soaring inflation, and the worst economic unrest the West African state had seen in years.

Mahama supporters celebrated in the streets outside the party campaign office in the capital, Accra, while blaring horns and whistles and waving the green, white, and red flags of the party.

“They thought he couldn’t return, yet he has. Enjoying the festivities, shopkeeper and Mahama supporter Leyla Alhassan declared, “The nation-builder is back to build our Ghana for us.”

After losing the 2016 and 2020 elections, it was Mahama’s third effort to regain the presidency as president of the opposition National Democratic Congress party, which he held from 2012 to 2017.

At a news conference, Bawumia declared, “Former President Mahama has won the presidential election decisively.”

Referring to the NPP’s internal compilation of poll results, Bawumia stated that Mahama’s NDC also prevailed in the parliamentary elections.

“The people of Ghana have spoken, the people have voted for change at this time and we respect it with all humility,” he stated.

As official vote tallies were still being received, the quick compromise was made. The results of the presidential and parliamentary elections have not yet been made public by electoral authorities.

Mahama has not yet made a public statement. However, Mahama acknowledged on his X account that Bawumia had called him to congratulate him on his “emphatic victory.”
