Jugnauth admits ‘big setback’ but Ramgoolam declares sweeping victory in Mauritius.

Opposition leader Navin Ramgoolam asserts that “the power of the people is stronger than a dictatorship.”

After Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth acknowledged he was facing a “huge defeat,” opposition leader Navin Ramgoolam of Mauritius announced on Tuesday that his alliance had defeated the government coalition in a landslide election.

In front of roaring fans in his constituency, Ramgoolam, a two-time former prime minister, said that his Alliance of Change had won all of the parliamentary seats on the island of Mauritius.

“PKJ should step down soon, I hope. In reference to Jugnauth, Ramgoolam stated, “He was beaten 60-0.”

The 77-year-old said, “The power of the people is stronger than a dictatorship,” amid the blasting horns and loud applause.

In Sunday’s election, 60 seats in the National Assembly were up for grabs on the island of Mauritius, while two more were up for grabs in Rodrigues. The “best loser” approach is used to distribute the remaining eight.

“Massive loss”
The official results of the referendum in one of Africa’s wealthiest and most stable countries have not yet been made public.

On Monday, however, Jugnauth had declared that his Militant Socialist Movement (MSM), which led his Lepep alliance, was “heading towards a huge defeat.”

The 70-seat parliament is frequently dominated by single coalitions due to the winner-take-all election model.

Jugnauth, who has been in power since 2017, was only last month commemorating a historic agreement with Britain that restores Mauritius’ sovereignty over the Chagos Islands following a protracted struggle.

However, a shocking wiretapping scandal that involved the online leak of covertly recorded phone conversations of journalists, legislators, diplomats, and civil society members overshadowed the vote.
