Deby Itno is proclaimed the winner of the presidential race by Chad

Provisional results indicate that Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno wins with just over 61% of the vote, with Succes Masra, the runner-up, trailing well behind with slightly over 18.5%.

Provisional results show that this week’s presidential election was won by Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno, the Transitional President of Chad.

Weeks ahead of schedule, late on Thursday, the national body in charge of Chad’s election declared the results of Monday’s poll. Deby Itno was victorious with slightly more than 61 percent of the vote, while Succes Masra, who came in second, received much less than 18.5 percent of the vote.

Chad held its much-awaited presidential election on Monday, October 1, 2022, after a military transition that lasted 24 months. The decision to transition cleared the door for the Transitional Military Council to run for office in the ensuing elections, as well as for President Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno to remain in his role as Transitional President.

After decades of French colonial control, the nation that exported oil and had a population of almost 18 million gained independent in 1960.

Chad, one of the least developed nations on earth, has seen several shocks, such as heatwaves brought on by the climate issue and a refugee problem connected to the civil conflict in neighboring Sudan.
