In Beijing, China, Hamas and Fatah convened for negotiations on Palestinian reunification.

The two Palestinian factions have completely declared their political commitment to achieve reconciliation through negotiation and consultation, according to the Chinese Foreign Ministry.

Hamas and Fatah, two opposing Palestinian organizations, reportedly had “in-depth and candid talks on promoting intra-Palestinian reconciliation” in Beijing recently, according to China.

Lin Jian, a spokeswoman for the foreign ministry, stated on Tuesday that “Representatives of the Palestine National Liberation Movement and the Islamic Resistance Movement recently came to Beijing,” using the official names of the organizations.

He went on, “The two sides fully expressed their political will to achieve reconciliation through dialogue and consultation, discussed many specific issues and made positive progress,” however he did not say when the meetings had taken place.

After winning an official parliamentary election the year before, Hamas was prevented from assuming actual power and eventually seized over the coastal territory from the Palestinian Authority in 2007.

Through the Palestinian Authority, Fatah retains some administrative authority in the West Bank that is under Israeli occupation.

China has long supported a two-state resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and shown sympathy for the Palestinian cause.

Since the beginning of Israel’s current attack on Gaza, Beijing has demanded a quick ceasefire.
