Thousands of protesters yell slogans like “Oh Hamas…all of Jordan’s people stand behind you,” expressing their support for the rebel organization Hamas, according to observers and locals.
Numerous protestors who attempted to march toward the strongly guarded Israeli embassy in the capital Amman were beaten and taken into custody by Jordanian anti-riot police, according to witnesses and locals.
More than two thousand demonstrators gathered late on Tuesday, the third day of the violent protests, as police with batons drove back hundreds of enraged mobs that were attempting to rush the embassy compound in Amman’s upscale Rabae neighborhood.
Protesters have traditionally gathered at the Israeli embassy, which has served as a focal point for anti-Israel demonstrations during Israel’s cruel siege and war on Gaza.
intense passions
Many protesters cheered for the rebel organization Hamas with their chants.
Cheering, “Oh Hamas…All of Jordan’s people are behind you,” the demonstrators yelled.
Jordanians are furious over the devastation in Gaza, where Israel’s ceaseless shelling has killed tens of thousands of civilians and leveled large portions of the heavily populated region.
After Hamas’ surprise October 7th bombing of its arch-enemy, Israel launched a war on the besieged Palestinians, sparking some of the largest public outbursts of anger in Jordan’s history.
According to Hamas, it was planned in retaliation for Israeli strikes on the Al-Aqsa Mosque, violence by illegal settlers in the occupied West Bank, and to “return the conversation” about the Palestine issue.
Hamas terrorists launched an astonishingly wide-ranging attack, encroaching on up to 22 non-Gaza areas, including towns and other settlements up to 24 kilometers away from the border. According to other accounts, they shot numerous troops dead while Israel’s military struggled to organize a defense.
They also brought over 240 hostages, including both Israeli military personnel and civilians, with them when they returned to Gaza. Afterwards, many of the prisoners were traded for Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli prisons.
Since then, Israel has been relentlessly bombarding Gaza from the air, land, and sea. As a result, over 32,400 Palestinians—mostly women and children—have died, over 74,700 have been wounded, and the majority of the 2.3 million residents of the small coastal enclave have been forced to flee.
