US forces to defend Taiwan if China attacks — Biden

US President Joe Biden said in an interview broadcast on Sunday that US forces would defend Taiwan in the event of a Chinese attack, his most unequivocal statement so far on the issue.

Asked in a CBS 60 twinkles interview whether US forces would defend the tone-ruled islet claimed by China, he replied” Yes, if in fact, there was an unknown attack.”

Asked to clarify if he meant that unlike in Ukraine, US forces, men and women, would defend Taiwan in the event of a Chinese attack, Biden replied “Yes.”

The interview was just the rearmost time that Biden has appeared to go further from long-standing stated US policy on Taiwan, but his statement was clearer than former bones about committing US colors to defend the islet.

Asked to note, a White House prophet said US policy towards Taiwan hadn’t changed.

“The chairman has said this ahead, including in Tokyo before this time. He also made clear also that our Taiwan policy hasn’t changed. That remains true,” the prophet said.

The CBS interview with Biden was conducted last week. The chairman is in Britain for Queen Elizabeth’s burial on Monday.

The United States has long stuck to a policy of not making clear whether it would respond militarily to an attack on Taiwan.

In May, Biden was asked if he was willing to get involved militarily to defend Taiwan and replied “Yes. That is the commitment we made.”

In the 60 twinkles interview, Biden reiterated that the United States didn’t support Taiwanese independence and remained married to a “One- China” policy in which Washington officially recognises Beijing, not Taipei.
