Without providing proof, the Republican president asserts that South Africa violates human rights and treats, “certain classes of people” poorly.
On Sunday, US President Donald Trump announced that he would no longer be providing South Africa with cash because of allegations of land theft and abuse of “certain classes of people”.
“South Africa is treating some groups of people VERY BADLY and seizing their land. The Radical Left Media doesn’t even want to bring up this unfortunate circumstance. At the very least, a tremendous violation of human rights is taking place for everyone to witness”, he stated on his Truth Social platform.
Trump stated that until a comprehensive investigation into the issue is finished, the US will stop providing any funding to the nation.
“The United States will take action; we will not tolerate it. Additionally, until a thorough inquiry into this matter is finished, I will be stopping all further funding to South Africa “, he added.
Trump later claimed that South Africa’s “leadership is doing some terrible things, horrible things” at a briefing with reporters, but he did not provide any examples.
“So, that is currently being looked into. We will make a decision, and until we learn more about what South Africa is doing, which may be much worse than the confiscation and theft of land”.
Last month, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa signed a measure stating that the government may provide “nil compensation” for property it chooses to expropriate in the public interest under specific conditions.
According to Pretoria, the bill requires the government to first attempt to come to an agreement with the owner and does not permit it to expropriate property without cause.
A controversial topic
Three decades after apartheid ended, the majority of farmland in South Africa is still controlled by white people, making land ownership a divisive topic.
Since then, land courts have decided a few land disputes and, following drawn-out procedures, given land back to owners who had been evicted.
The South African government claims that the apartheid government forcibly uprooted thousands of Black households from their land under the 1913 Natives Land Act.
