Tech behemoths in Southeast Asia have drawn Amazon Web Services (AWS) to invest the funds to build its cloud infrastructure in Singapore.
According to Amazon Web Services (AWS), the company plans to invest $8.88 billion (S$12 billion) over the following four years to enhance its cloud computing infrastructure in Singapore.
According to a statement released by AWS on Tuesday, the investment increases the $8.50 billion (S$11.5 billion) that the firm has previously committed in the Asia Pacific Region through 2023, bringing its total anticipated expenditure to more than $17 billion (S$23 billion) by 2028.
Top executives in Southeast Asia are vying for a larger share of the global IT pie. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang visited Malaysia, Vietnam, and Singapore in December, and Apple CEO Tim Cook visited Singapore, Vietnam, and Indonesia last month.
Apple is one of the recent investors in the area; the company plans to invest more than $250 million in its Singaporean operations.
According to the announcement, AWS also announced a partnership with public sector organizations, businesses, and the Singaporean government to assist speed up the country’s adoption of generative AI and artificial intelligence (AI).
“AWS is doubling down on its cloud infrastructure investments in Singapore from 2024 to 2028 to support customer demand, and help reinforce Singapore’s status as an attractive regional innovation launchpad,” AWS Country Manager Priscilla Chong said.
ASEAN Summit on AWS
Amazon made this statement as part of its newest plan to roll out AWS infrastructure throughout Southeast Asia during the AWS ASEAN Summit in Singapore.
The business has earlier declared plans to invest $5 billion in Thailand and $6 billion in Malaysia.
Amazon’s announcement follows Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella’s announcement, made during a tour to the area, of cloud services investments totaling $2.2 billion in Malaysia and $1.7 billion in Indonesia.
Southeast Asia boasts 670 million young, tech-savvy people, and technology giants are becoming more interested in the region.
In December, Reuters revealed that the utilities division of Malaysian conglomerate YTL would collaborate with Nvidia to create AI infrastructure through an investment agreement valued at $4.3 billion.
In a report published by the official news agency on Monday, Malaysia’s commerce minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz stated that Google will be making an announcement “in the near future” regarding its plans to invest in the nation.
