Taliban give three-month ceasefire as a trade-off for prisoner discharge

As the Taliban continues a sweeping offensive across the country. Afghan government negotiator informed that the Taliban had offered a three-month ceasefire in exchange for the discharge of 7,000 insurgent prisoners, adding that the insurgents have also demanded the removal of the Taliban’s leaders from a United Nations blacklist. “It is a big demand,” said Nader Nadery.

A senior Taliban leader had said that they do not want to battle government forces inside Afghanistan’s cities would rather see them surrender as the hardline group has already swept through much of the north, taking control of cities and borders after foreign troops complete their withdrawal, and therefore the Afghan government now holds little quite a constellation of provincial capitals that has got to largely be resupplied by air.

As foreign forces finish up their withdrawal to be completed by August 31 — things on the ground are changing rapidly. With the deteriorating security in Afghanistan France and the US sent rescue missions for their citizens and Afghan citizens who helped NATO and the US.

Taliban are taking over the cities, they are urging Afghan citizens to reach out to them, raising fears that the Afghan forces will not be enough to control the Taliban without the help of foreign forces and US air support.

The top US general in Afghanistan relinquished his command on Monday at a ceremony within the capital, the newest symbolic gesture bringing America’s longest war nearer to an end. Still, around 650 American service members are expected to stay in Kabul, guarding Washington’s sprawling diplomatic compound.
