Pakistan ‘won’t take sides’ in UN debate on Ukraine

UNITED NATIONS: Pakistan has decided not to share in the exigency session of the UN General Assembly that began on Monday to bandy the Ukrainian crises.

“ Pakistan has decided not to take sides on this issue,” a political source told Dawn. “ Islamabad supports a peaceful and negotiated agreement.”

Prime Minister Imran Khan, who visited Moscow on the day the irruption began, defended his decision on Monday, saying that he was there to bandy bilateral issues only.

The General Assembly is anticipated to wind up its debate on Tuesday and also representatives of further than 100 countries would have addressed the exigency session. The meeting will decide whether to support a US- patronized resolution that demands Russia’s immediate pullout from Ukraine.

Ukraine’s minister to the UN Sergiy Kyslytsya advised the global body that “ if Ukraine doesn’t survive, the UN won’t survive.”

Polish minister Krzysztof Szczerski told the meeting that Pakistani civilians and scholars were among those thousands of people who were seeking retreat in Poland and the Polish government was sheltering them.

The General Assembly has only held 10 exigency sessions since 1950, in line with a provision extensively known as the Uniting for Peace resolution.

The resolution gives the assembly the power to take up important matters when the Security Council is unfit to act due to differences among its five endless members.

A General Assembly debate is considered the world body’s second-stylish option because its judgments are non-binding, unlike those of the Security Council.

The US, which initiated the debate, first went to the Security Council on Feb. 25, seeking a list resolution, but Russia nixed the trouble.

As the debate began, UN Secretary-General António Guterres informed the assembly that while Russian strikes were largely targeting Ukrainian military installations, they had “ believable accounts” of non-military targets sustaining heavy damage.

“ Enough is enough,” he said. “ This raising violence … is completely inferior. Dogfaces need to move back to their barracks. Leaders need to move to peace.”

He also emphasized the need to admire “ the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of Ukraine, within its internationally honored borders.”

Assembly President Abdulla Shahid informed the meeting “ As we convene than in the General Assembly, mediators from both sides are holding addresses in Belarus” to end the extremity that began last week.

Although China and India had abstained from the Feb. 25 vote in the Security Council, they shared in Monday’s debate.

China’s Permanent Representative Zhang Jun said China supports the EU, Nato, and Russia continuing dialogue including the “ licit” security enterprises of all, including Moscow’s.

Russia defended its decision to foray into Ukraine as a member state after the member state called for ending the war. Russian minister Vassily Nebenzia rejected the suggestion that Moscow launched the military operation to cover residers of breakaway regions in eastern Ukraine.
